SOUND PANELS
2013 – ongoing
Part of the ongoing NAMING RIGHTS artwork, SOUND PANELS aestheticise the externalized contradictions of waste inherent in producing exhibitions. . SOUND PANELS were made available for exhibition, as artworks in themselves, and specifcally as sound panels for acoustic treatment, or both. Every time the SOUND PANELS are used, they acquire new marks, layers and provenance and sound histories.
SOUND PANELS is a cycle of 15 sculptures sourced as used art display material. Originally part of the ongoing NAMING RIGHTS artwork, SOUND PANELS aestheticise the (normally) externalized contradictions of waste inherent in producing exhibitions. Conceived to make circularity one of the core paths of its function as an artwork generating machine and to address ecological concerns in the commercial gallery, NAMING RIGHTS utilized unrealized surplus value to make ‘reuse’ one of the central tenets of its function as an artwork generating machine.
SOUND PANELS are available for exhibition, either as unique untethered artworks in themselves, or specifcally as sound panels for acoustic treatment, or both. Every time the NAMING RIGHTS objects (SOUND PANELS, PAINTED BOX SETS, CUT CARPETS) are used, they acquire new marks, layers and provenance, and a new layer of fabric.
To use the artwork, the following conditions apply:
1. The work must be transported in a way that maintains its current condition.
2. After arrival at an exhibition the work can be recovered (added to) as agreed and needed, but may not have any material removed or otherwise changed.
3. The work must be returned to NAMING RIGHTS soft wrapped in its new state, as it was in the most recent exhibition.
